Summer mornings in the Ample Hills kitchen are a beautiful, creative bustling time of day. Our kitchen staff has begun the day with intention and gusto; baking, chopping, boiling, churning, and mixing. A nice Reggae beat is playing, and the mood is chill (no pun intended) but the pace is fast and all are in continuous motion.
As the day progresses, the music gets a little more intense, some new staff comes in and the sounds and smells get heavier. Freshly baked Ooey Gooey permeates the kitchen and wafts into the shop, classic rock starts to take over the island tunes and the sounds of the metal on the batch freezer (ice cream maker) clang open and shut.
By the late afternoon, a new shift of folks arrive. Pinting freshly churned tubs become the main kitchen activity. All our pints are hand packed and take time to fill. Chopping and prepping and churning continue to occur as well but only briefly. At about 8pm all then turn their attention to cleaning, scrubbing, sanitizing and washing in preparation for the morning crew. And then, this process starts over again.
We have an amazing crew in the kitchen. They work hard, take pride in their roles and know how to have a good time. I enjoy spending time with them. They are quirky, eccentric, artistic, individualistic, interesting and fun to hang out with. When I asked what their favorite flavor of ice cream to eat was and what they most enjoyed making in the kitchen, there were a few surprises. For example, I wouldn't have guessed so many would have chosen Cotton Candy. Didn't know the “blue flavor”- as so many kids refer to it as-would be popular with the among the grown up kitchen crew.
Our Kitchen Crew
Over the next couple weeks, we want to let you have a glimpse of the many faces and personalities of the folks that work hard to create the smoothest, most playful and richly packed ice cream flavors you've had the joy of indulging on. We'll be featuring each one of our Ample kitchen crew on our instagram feed as well.
His favorite thing to bake is Ooey Gooey Butter Cake. His favorite flavors: The Munchies and Cotton Candy. You know he's in the kitchen when you hear Reggae tunes.
Christian started at Ample Hills the day we opened in May of 2011 as a scooper. He quickly realized his strengths were best suited for the back of house. He's been churning ever since. While he likes ice cream his true love is the marshmallow and was even nicknamed "The Shmallow Master". Favorite flavor: Snap, Mallow, Pop. Favorite thing to make: Honey comb candy.
When Graham isn't painting beautiful psychedelic imagery, he is mixing, stirring and baking some of our signature flavors. In true artist fashion he loves to create. One of his proudest and most delicious creations was a mix in that was a peanut butter maple rice krispie bar. We used this mix in for a flavor called PB Chops. His favorite flavor to eat is The Munchies.
