We opened up our first brick and mortar shop in Astoria just one week ago...and what a week it’s been! Our Astoria scoop shop is our 10th location—we’re officially in double digits now—and we couldn’t feel luckier. From the second we unlocked the doors, we were met with endless support. If the welcome had been any warmer, our ice cream would have melted!
Originally, we intended to celebrate our opening day by giving the first 100 scoops away. But they went so quickly, we spontaneously decided to give away even more. After all, guests started waiting in line at least half an hour before we opened—we wanted to treat them to something! For the entire first hour, every kid’s scoop was free.
Meet the first in line. These lovely ladies are part of Ample Hills history, as the first guests to snag a scoop at our Astoria scoop shop.
We kept the housewarming party going for hours with free samples of ooey gooey butter cake, fresh fudge brownies and even our limited edition blue velvet flavor 20/20 The Scoop!
All weekend long, guests came from all over to see Astoria’s newest sweet spot. One dedicated ice cream fan had moved away from New York...but just happened to be in Astoria for a wedding the same weekend we opened and made it a priority to drop by! We also were visited by previous winners of Tour de Hills (a summer challenge to visit all of our scoops shops in one day). Hopefully the trip to Queens helps them plan their route this year, so they can become two-time Hillionaires. We saw old friends who had moved away from Brooklyn and sweetly expressed how grateful they were that we had finally opened up in Queens. But we were especially moved by all of our new guests—Ample Hills first timers—who were so enthusiastic about trying our ice cream and welcoming us into the Astoria community. Endearingly, an entire group of new moms planned a trip to scope out our scoop shop on opening day; strollers in tow! It’s always been our aim to be an ice cream shop where families and friends gather to spend quality time together, so this was an honor. Plus, there’s nothing quite like watching a baby try their first ice cream.
It was also the debut of our newest flavor, Nectar of the Queens. Each of our scoop shops hosts a shop-specific flavor harkening back to the history of its neighborhood; just one of the many ways we like to celebrate the communities surrounding our shops. Inspired by the beautiful Greek heritage of Astoria, our Astoria shop-specific flavor Nectar of the Queens is a smooth honey cinnamon ice cream generously mixed with pieces of baklava and galaktoboureko from Astoria’s own Artopolis Bakery. Baklava is a decadent dessert known for its luxurious layers of chopped nuts and flaky filo pastry, but we couldn’t say no to the galaktoboureko—a creamy custard pie with a crispy filo crust. Why not both? Our light and sweet honey cinnamon ice cream balances every buttery bite. By collaborating with the beloved Artopolis Bakery, we’re proud to showcase authentic Greek pastries in every scoop.
To find the perfect name for our Astoria shop-specific flavor, we hosted a competition of Olympic proportions. Congratulations to @sallyslavinski, who suggested ‘Nectar of the Queens!’ While this tantalizing flavor won’t bless you with eternal life, there’s something about ice cream that certainly can feel like eternal youth. And many found this flavor quite tempting. In fact, Nectar of the Queens was such a success that we sold out in just two and a half days! We opened at 4pm on Friday...not even halfway through Saturday, we had to ask Artopolis Bakery to bake more pastry!

On Friday June 22, 2018 at 4pm, we opened our Astoria scoop shop...to a line wrapping around the corner. And that line lasted all weekend long. All we can say is, “thank you.” Thank you for welcoming us into your neighborhood. Just reading the community’s kind words on Astoria Post, NY Post, BOAST and We Heart Astoria melted our hearts. Thank you to the MTA, for opening the newly renovated 30th Avenue N/W subway stop—three blocks down from our shop—the exact same day we opened! Talk about a good omen. And thank you to our Amployees, who worked right up until 3:59pm to ensure our opening day went off without a hitch. Our opening week has been so divine, you could say it was fit for a queen. Or well, for Queens.
