7 years ago, Ample Hills Creamery opened its first shop and in 4 days, we sold out completely. Running out of ice cream was as frightening as it was exciting. To churn enough ice cream for our eager customers, we had to close. What if no one came back? Every year, we commemorate our Ampleversary with Sell-Out Celebration. This day long party has one simple goal: to sell out again. We start with 24 flavors. Whenever a flavor sells out, we drop the price of a small scoop until it’s free! Sure, it’s our birthday party, but we’re celebrating YOU. We host Sell-Out Celebration every year at our Prospect Heights Scoop Shop (our first location) to thank the neighborhood for supporting us through that scary time….and for coming back.
What makes Sell-Out Celebration so special is the chance to really connect with our community. Our founders Brian and Jackie always envisioned opening a real neighborhood ice cream shop. Not just a place that sells ice cream, but a ‘home away from home.’ Sell-Out Celebration brings together customers both old and new. For us, ice cream has always been about so much more than dessert. We believe in making a memory with every scoop.
Throughout the day, Jackie made a point of chatting with the eager ice cream lovers attending. One customer mentioned that she once tragically dropped her ice cream cone outside of our Gowanus Scoop Shop. She never forgets to commemorate the anniversary of this fateful day (it’s May 6, 2015). Immediately, Jackie remembered this tale from Twitter. She was @itsabbe!
Abbe had been too embarrassed to ask for another scoop. (We’ve all been there). And of course, we wanted to make it right. And Jackie was happy to put a face to the name...or well, the handle.
Jackie also was reunited with Adrienne, who has been a loyal customer - and friend - since literally day one. On our opening day, Adrienne was nine months pregnant and understandably in need of ice cream. Since then, Adrienne has been such an integral part of Ample Hills that we even featured her in our cookbook! Adrienne’s daughter Neva is now nearly seven years old - just like us! It can be a little surreal.
Neva’s first ever scoop of ice cream was Double Dutch Love, a flavor imagined by Adrienne and churned by us. Seeing Adrienne again really made the 7th Annual Sell-Out Celebration a true homecoming. Our goal is to celebrate the people who share our love of ice cream; no one exemplifies that more than Adrienne. As we say in our cookbook, “You’re not really an Amployee until you’ve met and been approved by Adrienne.”
We were also joined by a couple that got engaged at Ample Hills. They’re married now, but still have a sweet tooth. He proposed by surprising her with a ring packed inside a pint of Sweet As Honey. We recognized the couple instantly, of course! Being able to play a part in these special moments is why we make ice cream. We love knowing we’re making something that’s more than just milk, cream, sugar and eggs.
The 7th Annual Sell-Out Celebration was especially sweet. All day long, we gave out prizes, hung up balloons and dropped the prices until we were giving ice cream away. As soon as the ice cream was free, our Amployee Jason went out on the street to let every passerby know! After all, it only happens once a year. The best part was bonding with guests over ice cream; even some from (literally) the very beginning. We’ve grown a lot since then, but we haven’t grown up. We still think there’s something magical about a getting a free scoop of ice cream. Thanks for sharing that magic with us. Selling out never gets stale.
