The second weekend of June, we were thrilled to scoop at The Big Apple Barbecue Block Party, benefiting Madison Square Park Conservancy. For June 9-10, 2018 only, Madison Square Park was transformed from an unassuming patch of green hidden in Midtown to a spring street party bursting with charcoal grills, live music and smokey, simmering ‘cue. Pitmasters from all over the nation gathered for a weekend of nonstop grilling. And Ample Hills was invited!
Deciding which flavor to bring on down to the BBQ was easy. Corn to Run, of course! This crowd favorite is a creamy corn ice cream mixed with housemade cornmeal crumbles and blueberry swirls.
Corn makes an appetizing appearance at every summer cookout but never quite like this. You could say Corn to Run served as our sweet twist on this classic side dish. The Big Apple Barbecue Block Party was the perfect excuse to bring this beloved flavor back.
And evidently, everyone agreed. In those two days alone, we scooped over 240 gallons of ice cream! We scooped cups and cones nonstop all weekend long. Some guests came out to The Big Apple BBQ specifically for a scoop of Corn to Run! Not even the threat of rain could keep our eager customers away. This might sound corny, but it turns out Corn to Run really is ‘a-maize-ing’.
The Big Apple Barbecue Block Party invites families and friends from all over to kick off their summer with a weekend of sun and smoke! For city folks like us, this lazy country cookout nestled amongst the skyscrapers is a rare but wonderful find in an urban jungle. We were thrilled to participate in an event adding so much to the community. What made it even more meaningful was that every sale helped a good cause! The Big Apple BBQ benefits the Madison Square Park Conservancy, which works tirelessly year round to keep the park beautiful. It was also an honor to scoop ice cream alongside dishes from BBQ legends John Stage from Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, Ash Fulk from Hill Country...and so many more! These chefs have remarkable talent and truly make for excellent company. In its 16th year, The Big Apple BBQ is only getting better and we feel lucky to be included. We’ll always be glad we took a bite out of the Big Apple with The Big Apple Barbecue Block Party.
